In the 1950s, cup manufacturers realized that adding a wax barrier would make the cups leak-free. But it also created a new problem because those wax-coated cups were difficult to recycle and not environmentally friendly. Then in the 1990s the manufacturers tried a plastic coating, instead of wax. Unfortunately, this only contributed to the plastic waste problem we still have over a half-century later.
We are experimenting with a new material called polylactic acid (PLA). PLA is a type of bioplastic produced from renewable resources such as corn starch. It will degrade fully and is a great environmentally-friendly option over traditional plastic coatings. This means if you toss your cups after using them, they won’t hurt the planet as much as regular plastic cups do.
The cup's waterproof and leak-proof properties are achieved through plastic or wax coating. But, as we said before, this coating is not biodegradable. This means that when the item has served its purpose and you throw it away, it can take a really long time to break down, and it can cause issues to your surrounding environment.
